The growing popularity of Cannabidiol is leading manufacturers to introduce different products in the forms of CBD oils, tinctures, gummies, salves, pills, and capsules. Several companies claim that CBD can help alleviate various health problems including anxiety, but it is essential to explore more about the effects and potential benefits of any substance before adding it to your regime.

If you are an anxiety patient and planning to use CBD oil to improve your condition solely based on others’ experience, it is recommended to learn more about how CBD works to reduce anxiety and what CBD oil anxiety studies suggest, to make sure whether CBD helps alleviate such mental conditions or its merely a myth?

Keep on reading to find what studies say about using CBD oil for anxiety.

CBD and Anxiety

Cannabidiol is a chemical constituent of Cannabis Sativa. Though it comes from the cannabis plant, it does not produce intoxicating effects which are usually associated with THC, another cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant.

For decades, CBD is getting all the buzz for its medicinal and therapeutic effects, particularly on the nervous system. From trauma to anxiety, CBD has the potential for treating various neuropsychiatric disorders.

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental health conditions. From fears about challenges of life to a crippling fear of triggering situations, it covers a spectrum of experiences and feelings. As part of the adaptive systems, anxiety responses are instinctive and hardwired into our neurons.

For many of us, those responses can tip over into disorder which can further lead to panic attacks and trigger the symptoms of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).  Besides these psychiatric conditions, we can also experience stress, social anxiety, and generalized anxiety at some points in our lives.

A number of researches performed on both animals and humans suggest that CBD may help alleviate anxiety and can produce calming effects. Although the FDA does not regulate it for treating anxiety, still the results of various CBD oil anxiety studies show its effectiveness for anxiety patients.

What studies say about using CBD Oil for Anxiety?

It is evident from various studies that CBD interacts with the brain receptors of the human endocannabinoid system. The way CBD combines with our body’s cannabinoid receptors leads to CBD’s therapeutic effects that may even help reduce stress and anxiety.

At present, it is not clear how CBD helps treat anxiety, still, research has shown it may affect serotonin levels to reduce anxiety. Serotonin is a chemical in our body that plays an important role in our mood, behavior, immune system, and sleep.

Research shows Serotonin levels can help manage anxiety. Certain anti-anxiety medications regulate serotonin levels to release depression and anxiety. Cannabidiol also maintains Serotonin levels in our body to treat anxiety.

Due to the growing popularity of CBD and its use for the treatment of various health conditions, a number of studies have examined the effects of CBD on anxiety-reduction. Let’s take a look at some recent studies about the use of CBD for anxiety.

Many past studies show that CBD can be helpful for people with a social anxiety disorder and can reduce their discomfort when speaking in public. However, the results of a 2017 study show no evidence of CBD being helpful for anxiety or paranoia.

A 2015 review found that CBD interacts with serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, CB1 receptors, and other receptors in our brain that control anxiety-induced behaviors and fear. The author of this review analyzed 49 studies and found clinical and preclinical evidence that supported CBD as a potential treatment for different types of anxiety disorders such as;

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Social Anxiety Disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive Disorder
  • Panic Disorder
  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

A 2019 CBD for Anxiety Study

In 2019, a study was conducted to determine CBD’s effects on anxiety and sleep in a clinical population. The purpose of the research was to use CBD to treat 72 adults who were struggling with sleep disorders and anxiety.

Within the first month, about 80% of patients reported decreased anxiety scores whereas the sleep score improved in 66.7% of patients in the first month, but the results for sleep fluctuated over time. The overall results of this study indicate that CBD can be beneficial for anxiety disorders.

In a most recent study of 2020, researchers evaluated the effects of CBD on 397 adults of New Zealand who received medical prescriptions for various ailments such as cancer-related symptoms, non-cancer pain, mental health conditions, and neurological disorders.

After 3 weeks of receiving CBD treatment, patients of all the groups noticed an improvement in their overall health condition and quality of life. The patients who underwent CBD treatment for depression and anxiety experienced reduced pain and anxiety, and positive changes in their ability to perform daily tasks.

The Results of This CBD / Anxiety Study

The results of this study prove the anxiolytic benefits of CBD and its effectiveness for patients with mental conditions. We can also conclude from the outcomes that CBD is safe and well-tolerated for mental health, neurological, non-cancer chronic pain, and cancer symptoms.

Besides these scientific shreds of evidence, the authors of one most recent 2020 article analyzed eight studies to investigate the role of CBD in the treatment of anxiety disorders and found it effective for treating social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

However, there was a significant variation in CBD doses used in different studies ranging from 6 mg to 400 mg per dose. The varying dosage highlights the need for more accurate and large-scale clinical trials to determine standardized dosing.

Conclusion:

The results of most of the studies are generally positive, however, it is essential to keep in mind that the results don’t necessarily signify the general population as many of these studies are performed on small scale and do not look at the long-term effects of using CBD oil for anxiety.

Still, there is ample reason to confidently use CBD as an anti-anxiety treatment. The method of using CBD oil for anxiety patients depends on the kind of anxiety they are suffering from. It is essential to find high-quality CBD oil that contains almost no THC.

Since the FDA has not yet approved the use of CBD for anxiety treatment, patients who use prescription medication should consult their physician or healthcare provider before using CBD. Also, keep an eye on the ever-changing laws about the legal status of CBD in your area to make sure you are not violating the rules.
